Queridos amigos vicentinos,
Serviens in spe - Sirviendo con esperanza. Este es el lema de la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paúl en latín, y ha sido la expresión que utilizo para terminar mis cartas. La frase se encuentra dos veces en nuestra Regla. La primera instancia se encuentra en la descripción inicial del "Propósito y alcance de nuestro servicio". Leemos que “los miembros demuestran su compromiso a través del contacto de persona a persona. Los vicentinos sirven con esperanza ”. Sabemos que este contacto de persona a persona es muy difícil en este momento, pero la necesidad de que seamos personas de esperanza es más importante que nunca.
Estamos completando el tiempo litúrgico de Adviento. La temporada está marcada por la espera con esperanza. Es un tiempo en el que recordamos los eventos de la historia de Navidad y anticipamos la promesa de la Segunda Venida. Este ha sido un año de espera diferente a cualquier otro que haya experimentado. Gran parte de la forma en que hemos conducido nuestras vidas en el pasado está ahora en un estado de suspensión mientras esperamos.
Esperamos con la esperanza de una vacuna y tratamientos efectivos para el coronavirus, pero esperamos sabiendo que una vacuna no curará la pobreza, el hambre y la falta de vivienda. No curará las divisiones políticas y no curará el racismo. Una vez que el virus haya sido domesticado, estos males seguirán ahí. Los vicentinos deben trabajar para encontrar soluciones a sus causas fundamentales, y seguiremos profundamente involucrados en brindar alivio a sus efectos a través de nuestros esfuerzos caritativos.
Las lecturas de las Escrituras de Adviento nos animan a reflexionar sobre las esperanzas pasadas que se han cumplido en Cristo, así como nuestras esperanzas de un futuro aún más prometedor. Podemos hacer de este un período de renovación para nosotros personalmente si encontramos oportunidades en la temporada navideña para sentarnos en silencio en oración. Eso se puede hacer tarde en la noche con las luces del árbol de Navidad encendidas o en la oscuridad de la mañana antes de que otros se despierten. Si tiene actividades canceladas, ese tiempo puede usarse para orar con las lecturas de la Misa de ese día. Podemos aprovechar este tiempo de actividad suspendida y aprovechar al máximo el presente mientras miramos hacia atrás recordando bendiciones anteriores y confiando en la providencia de Dios.
Considere el estímulo que San Pablo ofreció a los primeros cristianos en Roma: “Estad gozosos en la esperanza, pacientes en la aflicción, fieles en la oración. Comparta con el pueblo del Señor que está en necesidad. Practica la hospitalidad. Bendice a los que te persiguen; bendice y no maldigas. Alégrate con los que se alegran; llorar con los que lloran. Vivir en armonía unos con otros."
Les ofrezco mi deseo de una Navidad muy bendecida. Que la temporada fortalezca su Fe y su compromiso con la práctica de la Caridad como miembro de nuestra Sociedad que sirve en Esperanza.

Dear Vincentian Friends,
Serviens in spe – Serving in hope. This is the motto of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Latin, and it has been the expression I use to end my letters to you. The phrase is found twice in our Rule. The first instance is in the opening description of the “Purpose and Scope of our Service.” We read that “Members show their commitment through person-to-person contact. Vincentians serve in hope.” We know that this person-to-person contact is very difficult right now, but the need for us to be people of hope is more important than ever.
We are completing the liturgical season of Advent. The season is marked by waiting in hope. It is a time in which we remember the events of the Christmas story and anticipate the promise of the Second Coming. This has been a year of waiting unlike any I have experienced. Much of how we have conducted our lives in the past is now in a state of suspension as we wait.
We wait in hope for a vaccine and effective treatments for the coronavirus, but we wait knowing that a vaccination will not cure poverty, hunger and homelessness. It will not heal political divisions, and it will not cure racism. After the virus has been tamed, these ills will still be there. Vincentians must work toward solutions to their root causes, and we will remain deeply involved in providing relief from their effects through our charitable efforts.
Advent’s scripture readings provide us with encouragement to reflect on past hopes that have been fulfilled in Christ – as well as on our hopes for an even more-promising future. We can make this a period of renewal for ourselves personally if we find opportunities in the Christmas season to sit quietly in prayer. That could be done late at night with Christmas tree lights on or in the dark of the morning before others awake. If you have activities that are canceled, that time can be used to pray with that day’s Mass readings. We can use this time of suspended activity and make the most out of the present as we look backward remembering previous blessings and forward trusting in God’s providence.
Consider the encouragement St. Paul offered the early Christians in Rome: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.” [1]
I offer you my wish for a very blessed Christmas. May the season strengthen your Faith and your commitment to the practice of Charity as a member of our Society serving in Hope.
