No puedo dejar de pensar con frecuencia en mi nieta y sus bonitos diecisiete años, cuando rezo el Ángelus. Seguramente, alguno de los lectores, se preguntarán ¿qué me lleva a ese pensamiento y a unir el recuerdo de mi nieta con el Ángelus? La explicación es muy sencilla: a esa edad aproximada, parece que aún un poco más joven, Gabriel, el ángel del Señor, anunció a María que el Espíritu Santo la cubriría con su sombra y sería la madre de Dios.
“La misión del Espíritu Santo está siempre unida y ordenada a la del Hijo (cf Jn 16, 14-15) El Espíritu Santo fue enviado para santificar el seno de la Virgen María y fecundarla por obra divina, él que es “el Señor que da la vida”, haciendo que ella conciba al Hijo eterno del Padre en una humanidad tomada de la suya” (C.I.C. 485)
Sé que los tiempos son distintos, pero cuando pienso en aquel embarazo y veo la niñez de mi nieta, no puedo dejar de sentir cierta angustia y admiración por aquella joven virgen que aceptó, sin dudarlo, los designios que venían de lo Alto. No lo dudó, pero otra cosa es lo que pudo removérsele en su alma. En ese punto, en ese tiempo, siempre me detengo y trato de sumergirme en su contemplación y cada vez me admiro más.
Seguro que pensaría en José que aún no la había recibido en su casa. Seguro que pensó en sus conocidos, en sus parientes. Ella sabía que era Él quien la había escogido, pero ¿y los demás? ¿Cómo recibirían la noticia de su embarazo? ¿Qué pensarían?
Aquella niña, acababa de aceptar el mayor reto que ningún ser humano ha recibido a lo largo de la Historia: nada menos que haber escuchado del enviado del Dios Altísimo, un mensaje para ella y creérselo: creer y aceptar que iba a ser madre pues había sido elegida desde el principio de los tiempos por Él para serlo del Hijo amado. Sin duda, su alegría en el tiempo en que veía como cambiaba su cuerpo para acogerle, era sólo comparable al sufrimiento de aquellos tres días, vividos muchos años más tarde, mientras esperaba la vuelta a la vida de Aquel que era la Vida. De Aquel al que la maldad de los hombres pretendía haber eliminado. Aquel que lo había aceptado todo, que había cargado con los pecados del mundo por todos y cada uno de nosotros. Aquel que nos acompaña cada día, cada minuto, cuando le dejamos espacio para ello.
¿Somos capaces de aceptar, de valorar y de agradecer, que el perdón y la salvación del mundo, por los inabarcables designios del mismo Dios, estuvo por unos instantes en las manos de una niña? ¡De la libertad, respetada por el mismo Dios, para aceptarlo o no de una niña! ¡De una niña de la edad de mi nieta!
Iniciamos un nuevo curso lleno de incertidumbres. De conocidas y desconocidas amenazas. Salvando todas las distancias, tal y como debió vivir María, la Virgen, aquellas primeras semanas de su embarazo.
Pongamos nuestra confianza en ella y vayamos caminando, sabiendo que Él, su Hijo, siempre nos acompaña cuando le dejamos ir a nuestro lado como señalaba antes. Cuando le damos espacio junto a nosotros. A ella, a María, encomiendo siempre el cuidado de mi nieta.

THE FREEDOM OF A YOUNG GIRL
When I pray the Angelus, I can't help thinking often of my granddaughter and her beautiful seventeen years of age. Surely, some of the readers will wonder what makes me unite the memory of my granddaughter with the Angelus. The explanation is very simple: approximately at that age, it seems that even a little younger, Gabriel, the angel of the Lord, announced to Mary that the Holy Spirit would cover her with his shadow and she would be the mother of God.
"The mission of the Holy Spirit is always united and linked to that of the Son (cf. Jn 16, 14-15). The Holy Spirit was sent to sanctify the womb of the Virgin Mary and to make her fruitful by divine work, he who is "the Lord who gives life", making her to conceive the eternal Son of the Father in a humanity taken from her own" (C.I.C. 485).
I know that the present times are different, but when I think of that pregnancy and see my granddaughter's childhood, I cannot help but feel a certain anguish and admiration for that young virgin who accepted, without hesitation, the designs that came from Above. She did not hesitate, but it is quite another thing what might have been stirred in her soul. At that point, at that moment, I always stop and try to immerse myself in her contemplation, and each time I admire her more and more.
She must have thought of Joseph, who had not received her yet at his home. She must have thought of her acquaintances, her relatives. She knew that it was He who had chosen her, but what about the others? How would they receive the news of her pregnancy? What would they think?
That little girl had just accepted the greatest challenge that any human being has ever faced in history: nothing less than to have heard a message for her from the One sent by God Most High, and to believe it: to believe and accept that she was going to be a mother, for she had been chosen by Him from the beginning of time to be the mother of the Beloved Son. No doubt, her joy at the time when she saw her body change to welcome Him, was only comparable to the suffering of those three days, lived many years later, as she waited for the return to life of the One who was Life. Of the One whom the wickedness of men claimed to have destroyed. The One who had accepted everything, who had borne the sins of the world for each and every one of us. The One who walks with us every day, every minute, when we give Him the space to do so.
Are we capable of accepting, appreciating and being grateful that the forgiveness and salvation of the world, by the unfathomable designs of God himself, was for a few moments in the hands of a young girl? Depending on the freedom of a girl, respected by God himself, to accept it or not! A girl the age of my granddaughter!
We begin a new year full of uncertainties, full of known and unknown threats. Relatively speaking, just as Mary, the Virgin, must have lived those first weeks of her pregnancy.
Let us put our trust in her and walk our journey, knowing that He, her Son, is always with us when we let Him walk next to us, as I have pointed out before. When we give Him a space beside us. To her, to Mary, I always entrust the care of my granddaughter.
