Pensaba: ¿Nos habremos dejado llevar por un engaño? Tenía mis dudas, pero como el resto, me he dejado llevar por un impulso de mi corazón y empiezo a preguntarme si estaba en lo correcto. ¿Dudarán los demás? Pero no lo parece. Claro que ellos podrán pensar de mí lo mismo. Tampoco yo me atrevo a dudar abiertamente y que se me note la desconfianza.
De momento, a pesar del tono de autoridad del mandato, no se ha movido, como debe ser y parece que no va a hacerlo. Creo que habrá que esperar para ver cómo termina todo esto pues él parece un hombre de creencias firmes. No, no creo que nos halla engañado.
Ahora parece que algo va a contestar a la mujer. ¿cómo va a dejarse dirigir por una simple mujer? Tendré el oído atento:
“¿Qué quieres de mí, mujer? (Jn 2. 1-11) Aún no ha llegado mi hora”. ¡Eso es! como buen varón le ha respondido adecuadamente, con firmeza, aunque no entiendo muy bien el sentido de lo que le dice en cuanto a su hora. Pero ella con mucha dulzura, no parece hacerle caso y ha dado instrucciones a los criados: “hagan lo que él les diga” Estoy asombrado, no sé cómo va a terminar esto. Pues los criados, le han escuchado, han llenado de agua las tinajas de la purificación como él ha ordenado y ahora pide que le lleven algo de beber al encargado y lo han hecho y parece que está alabando el vino que han sacado de la tinaja. ¡Pero si no había más que agua! He de probarlo. ¡A mí también me parece muy bueno! Comenta para sí mismo asombrado.
Va a tener razón Andrés cuando asegura que “hemos encontrado al Mesías (Jn 1.41) o Natanael cuando le llamaba “Hijo de Dios” (Jn 1.49)
Años más tarde, el discípulo, recordaría horrorizado este momento cuando viviera en su memoria, el abandono en el que dejó, que dejamos, al Hijo de Dios camino del más terrible, inhumano e injusto de los castigos.
¿Con cuánta frecuencia también nosotros hoy - dos mil años después de las imaginadas dudas del discípulo - abandonamos a los que sufren? A aquellos que han aparecido en nuestro camino para que les ayudemos: para que hagamos nuestra aquella parte del sufrimiento que pudiéramos evitar. A esos “cristos rotos” de los que a veces nos cansamos tan pronto y huimos.
A tantos que pretendemos ayudar y a los que con tanta frecuencia no hacemos otra cosa que intentar lavar nuestra conciencia. Cuando continuamos el camino después de depositar en un semejante que sufre, una modestísima limosna, ciertamente alejada de nuestro poder económico y moral, real creyendo haber hecho algo grande.
El discípulo, posiblemente escondiéndose, se alejó dolorido de aquella cobardía. Sintió que al Maestro lo había crucificado también el, por su cobardía. Sí, Andrés y Natanael tenían razón, verdaderamente era el Hijo de Dios.
Sí, se alejaría, pero volvería a ocupar su sitio e incluso a dar la vida por Cristo como tantos de los Discípulos del Maestro en aquellos primeros tiempos y en los actuales.
¿Hacemos nosotros lo mismo perseverando en nuestra Conferencia, sin cansarnos al cabo de pocos días atendiendo al que sufre?
Yo sé que yo no llego hasta donde debiera ¿Y tú?

THE DOUBT
I was thinking: Are we being deceived? I had my doubts, but like the rest, I let myself be carried away by an impulse of my heart and I begin to wonder if I was right. Will the others doubt? But it doesn't seem so. Of course, they may think the same of me. I don't dare to doubt openly and let my mistrust be noticed.
So far, despite the authoritative tone of the mandate, he has not moved, as he should, and it seems he is not going to. I think we will have to wait and see how this ends, as he seems to be a man of firm beliefs. No, I don't think he has fooled us.
Now it seems that he is going to answer to the woman. How can he let himself be led by a mere woman? I will be all ears:
"What do you want from me, woman? (Jn 2. 1-11) My hour has not come yet". That's right! As a proper man, he has replied correctly, with firmness, although I don't quite understand the meaning of what he is saying to her about his time. But she, with great gentleness, doesn't seem to pay any attention to him and has given instructions to the servants: "do what he tells you". I am amazed, I don't know how this is going to end. Well, the servants have listened to him, they have filled the purification jars with water as he has ordered and now, he asks the attendant to bring something to drink and they have done so and he seems to be praising the wine that they have taken out of the jar. But there was only water! I must try it. I think it's very good too! he says to himself in awe.
Andrew will be right when he assures us that "we have found the Messiah" (Jn 1.41) or Nathanael when he called him "Son of God" (Jn 1.49)
Years later, the disciple would recall with horror this moment when he lived in his memory the abandonment in which he left, which we left, the Son of God on the way to the most terrible, inhuman and unjust of punishments.
How often do we also today - two thousand years after the disciple's imagined doubts - abandon those who suffer? Those who have appeared on our path for us to help them: to make our own that part of the suffering we could avoid. Those "broken Christs" of whom we sometimes get tired so quickly and run away.
So many people we pretend to help and so often do nothing more than try to wash our conscience. When we continue on our way after having given to a fellow sufferer some modest alms, certainly far away from our economic and moral power, believing that we have done something great.
The disciple, possibly hiding, turned away in pain from his cowardice. He felt that he too had crucified the Master by his cowardice. Yes, Andrew and Nathanael were right, he really was the Son of God.
Yes, he would move away, but he would return to take his place and even give his life for Christ like so many of the Master's Disciples in those early days and today.
Do we do the same by persevering in our Conference, without tiring after a few days of caring for the suffering?
I know that I don't go as far as I should, do you?
